What does a comprehensive motor warranty actually cover?

Your manufacturer warranty has run out, and suddenly every strange noise from the engine feels like a financial threat. A comprehensive motor warranty steps in where the factory cover left off, paying for repairs to major mechanical and electrical components so you are not stuck with a five-figure bill.

But "comprehensive" is a broad word. What exactly falls under the umbrella, what stays outside it, and how do the numbers stack up across different plan tiers? This guide breaks it down, category by category, using real Rand limits from The Unlimited's warranty plans.

The four main coverage categories

A comprehensive motor warranty groups covered parts into distinct categories, each with its own claim limit. Below are the categories and limits on The Unlimited's Comprehensive plan (R529/month).

1. Engine components — up to R83,500

The engine is the most expensive system to repair, and it is the centrepiece of any comprehensive warranty. Covered parts typically include the cylinder block, crankshaft, piston rings, and gaskets, among others. If your engine seizes because of a manufacturing defect or internal mechanical failure, the warranty covers the repair or replacement of those parts up to the stated limit.

When it kicks in: Your car's engine develops a knock traced to a failed crankshaft bearing. The workshop diagnoses it as a mechanical failure, not caused by neglect or lack of servicing. The warranty covers the parts and labour up to R83,500 on the Comprehensive plan.

2. Aircon components — up to R16,700

South African summers make aircon a near-essential, and compressor replacements alone can run into thousands of Rands. A comprehensive warranty covers the compressor, condenser, and evaporator.

Important restriction: Aircon cover applies to factory or dealer-fitted genuine air conditioners only. Aftermarket aircon units installed independently are not covered.

3. Clutch, fuel pump, and electrical components — up to R35,600

This category bundles together some of the parts most likely to wear out in stop-start city driving. Covered components include the starter motor, alternator, and voltage regulator, alongside the clutch assembly and fuel pump.

When it kicks in: Your alternator fails on the N1, leaving your battery unable to charge. Because this is an electrical failure (not a service item like a dead battery from age), the warranty covers the alternator replacement.

4. Towing and transportation — up to R4,360

If your vehicle breaks down and needs to be towed to an approved repairer as part of an approved warranty claim, towing and transportation costs are covered up to R4,360. This applies only when the breakdown itself falls under the warranty.

All three tiers cover over 100 parts for mechanical breakdowns and electrical failures. The main differences are in the per-category claim limits and the total aggregate, which is the maximum the plan will pay out across all categories combined.

Which tier fits? The Essential plan suits drivers who want core mechanical protection at the lowest monthly cost. The Comprehensive plan offers a strong middle ground, with significantly higher engine and electrical limits. The Premium plan is built for owners of higher-value vehicles where repair costs tend to be steeper.

What a comprehensive warranty typically does not cover

No motor warranty covers everything. While The Unlimited's product pages do not publish a full exclusion list, the following are standard exclusions across the South African motor warranty industry. Always confirm the specifics in your policy wording.

  • Pre-existing faults. Any mechanical issue present before the warranty was activated is excluded.
  • Unauthorized repairs. Repairs not pre-approved by the warranty provider will not be reimbursed.
  • Routine service and maintenance items. Oil, filters, spark plugs, brake pads, and other consumables are service costs, not warranty claims.
  • Damage from accidents, incorrect fuel, or oil leaks. Warranties cover mechanical and electrical failure, not damage caused by external events or owner error.
  • Odometer tampering. If the vehicle's odometer has been altered, cover may be voided.
  • Components still under manufacturer or supplier warranty. The aftermarket warranty is designed to take over after the factory cover ends, not to overlap with it.

How to claim

Filing a claim with The Unlimited follows a straightforward process:

1. Call 0861 990 000 as soon as a mechanical or electrical issue occurs. The same number handles emergencies, customer care, and claims.

2. Get the repair pre-approved. The claims team will authorize the repair through a network of trusted service providers and mechanics.

3. Repair or cash settlement. The Unlimited repairs or replaces the faulty part. If neither is possible, they settle the cost in cash.

Frequently asked questions

What does "comprehensive" mean compared to "essential" or "premium"?
All three tiers cover the same 100+ parts. "Comprehensive" sits in the middle, with higher per-category claim limits than Essential and lower limits than Premium. The total aggregate on the Comprehensive plan is R415,860 versus R313,910 on Essential and R566,480 on Premium.

Is an aftermarket motor warranty worth it once the manufacturer warranty expires?
Manufacturer warranties in South Africa generally last between 3 and 5 years, depending on the brand. After they expire, you carry the full cost of any mechanical or electrical failure. Engine repairs alone can run into tens of thousands of Rands. A comprehensive warranty spreads that risk into a fixed monthly premium, in this case R529 per month.

Does a comprehensive warranty cover high-mileage vehicles?
Coverage depends on the provider's eligibility criteria. The Unlimited's product pages do not list a mileage cap, but it is worth confirming your vehicle's eligibility at sign-up by calling 0861 990 000 or applying online.

Who underwrites The Unlimited's warranty?
The Unlimited's warranty products are underwritten by Dotsure.
