Managing Spring Allergies

The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, you open the window to take in a deep breath of beautiful spring air and...

Achoo.

Your allergies start playing up.

Pollen is the main seasonal trigger, while year‑round culprits like dust mites, mould, and pet dander can cause similar allergic rhinitis symptoms. These include congestion, a runny nose, and watery eyes.

Fortunately, there are a few practical habits that can help

1. Know your triggers

Notice when your symptoms tend to flare up or worsen. Understanding what may be triggering them can make it easier to manage your exposure and help you take a few simple steps to ease the irritation.

2. Keep the outside, outside

  • Consider keeping windows and doors closed when pollen levels are high.
  • Shower and change clothes after being outdoors to wash away any pollen.
  • Use a saline nasal flush to clear allergens and ease congestion.
  • Limit pet dander by giving your fur babies regular baths.

3. Keep it clean and dry

  • Wash all bedding at a high temperature (ideally 60°C/140°F) to reduce dust mites.
  • Keep dampness in check by wiping down wet surfaces with a dry cloth (like showers) and fixing leaks to stop mold growth

4. Speak to a healthcare professional when necessary

If your symptoms are worsening, affecting your sleep or everyday life, or not responding to the measures you're taking, it's worth seeking medical advice.

A pharmacist or healthcare practitioner can advise you on suitable ways to manage allergy symptoms.
